JSF Mentors are the core value of our program. The breadth and depth of experience in our Mentor group is the most critical aspect of our program participants and the factor distinguishing Jumpstart Foundry form other (less successful) programs.
JSF is designed to be a Marine-style boot camp for aspiring 1st time entrepreneurs. When the participants enter the program they have lots of energy, intelligence and potential, but little start-up experience. They have chosen to accelerate the growth of their business by jumping into the JSF program for the summer.
Mentors act as the Green Berets of the JSF boot camp program. They have worked in multiple startups and founded companies. Mentors have been to the front lines, taken live fire and are battle-tested. This experience has taught Mentors invaluable lessons (they have the scars to prove it). Of course, Mentors know the text book answers (methodologies, corporate strategies, and tactics). However they also have the perspective and confidence to break these rules when necessary.
JSF Mentors have chosen to donate their time (5-8 hours / week) in order to prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs to be successful. They find it intellectually stimulating and fun to help these innocent, optimistic entrepreneurs prepare for battle. Mentors enjoy sharing experiences and providing advice – they are never shy about the necessary course of action.
A large part of the value of JSF lies in learning how to process disparate information and advice from multiple Mentors and assimilate this feedback into a coherent direction for their company. There is no absolutely correct strategy for a startup. This is reality. JSF participants learn to listen to the wisdom of the Mentors and then make the best decision for their startup.
- Have you fought start-up wars and won?
- Would you like to give back to the community?
- Think you have what it takes to be a JSF Mentor?
